Thanks Susan,

I didn't know about how to "force an apostrophe" when smart quotes are on.
Not knowing how to force an apostrophe is is where I kept getting unstuck
with smart quotes so chose to work with them off completely. This is
definitely worth looking at.

I'm attaching a Word file using the different options for quotes. This will
provide the option to test the different quotes with your version of DBT.
How smart quotes are translated changed with more recent versions of DBT.
The results of the document are accurate for both 10.6 and 10.7. If the file
doesn't come through, I've pasted the file at the end of this message, but
I'm not sure it will come through accurately, so the attachment will be a
better test.

The bottom line is that smart quotes translate correctly for both 10.6 and
10.7. The problem is getting the apostrophe vs. the left quote when an
apostrophe begins the word. That is the only time using a smart quote is an
issue. The smart quotes translate correctly when the single quotes are used
in a case such as "She screamed, 'Stop!' at him." FYI, if you are typing,
the shortcut keystroke to get an apostrophe instead of a left single quote
is Ctrl+'+' (press Control and then the apostrophe TWICE).

As noted by others, the straight quotes do not translate the single quotes
correctly. Not surprising, the only time the grave accent translates
correctly is when used for the single quote passage.

Using the smart quotes is more efficient option for using quotes in a
document. Many documents already have smart quotes, and changing them when
it isn't necessary isn't a good use of valuable time when the only concern
is if an apostrophe comes at the beginning of a word.
