Hi George,
Thanks for confirming this. I thought I'd heard it somewhere, but then couldn't
find anything to back it up.
Off-topic for a Duxbury list perhaps, but how does the new Juliet 120 compare
with the Index Basic D V5? Same product but different name? Same hardware but
different firmware? An Index embossing head in what is otherwise an Enabling
Technologies product? A different product altogether?
I ask because I find old Enabling braille far superior to old Index braille,
but I still prefer Index embossers on the whole as they are smaller, quicker
and personally I find them easier to use. Granted, I have spent many more years
with an Index embosser than an Enabling one, so I may have just needed more
time. It would be interesting to know whether there is still a difference
between the Index Basic and Enabling Juliette in terms of their braille quality.
I am in the fortunate position of having used a Basic V2, V3, V4 and V5 from
index, and I still have access to all but the V2 for comparison. The braille on
the V4 was a significant step up over the braille on the V3, especially on
thinner paper - I found the V3 didn't cope with double sided braille on thin
paper very well. On thicker paper, the difference is less noticeable, but you
can still tell which braille came from which unit if you compare the difference
between the front side and the back side: the V3 adjusts downwards for the back
side, i.e. if the front side started 5 mm from the top of the page, the back
side would start probably 7 or 8 mm from the top; the V4 doesn't seem to do
this, or if it does it doesn't do it nearly as much - maybe by 1 or 2 mm? But
it looks more like a sideways adjustment to me. It is much more subtle, in any
case.
The braille quality on the V5 is meant to be even better than the V4.
Personally I cannot feel any difference on thinner paper. On thicker paper, the
dots appear to be more pronounced than on the V4 - they are much closer to
Enabling Technologies quality. They could perhaps do with still being a little
sharper, but they have at least got the shape spot on.
There is a not insubstantial difference in embossing speed between the V4 and
the V5 - the V5 is noticeably quicker. I think the speed increase is from about
100 Hz to about 120 Hz. There are some sound samples here:
http://audioboom.com/mhorspool
The difference between V3 speed and V4 speed is negligible, but if anything I
would say that the V4 was slightly slower. The V5 is still much quicker than
the V3 though.
The bottom line is that if you haven't tried in Index embosser since the days
of version 3, you are well advised to give them another go, as many of the
problems from those days have been fixed.
I can't speak to repair in the US (I am in the UK), but the V4 that I have at
home developed a hammer fault a mere three or four weeks after purchase. It was
returned under warranty and repaired free of charge, and has been absolutely no
trouble since then. It is coming up on two years old now.
Hope this has given you some insight. Sorry I can't be any help with the other
embossers mentioned.
Best wishes,
Matthew

Hi All,
Before anyone gets too confused, please be aware that Enabling Technologies
have discontinued production of their own manufacture of the Juliet Embossers,
and replace it with a unit called the "Juliet 120" made by an external 3rd
party manufacturer - Index from Sweden.

Chelsea:
I have a Juliet Pro 60 that I have had for three years now. I have not had any
problems with it; with the exception of having to go through the computer to
shut down a print job. I have not had to send it out for any repairs as of yet;
however, I would get a warranty and continue to purchase it each year ($505.00
for yearly renewal). This will help alleviate any repair charges that may be
lurking in the woodwork. Anyway, since this is my very first embosser, cannot
comment on any others. Success to you and your search.

Our braille department purchased 3 Juliet Classics. Within 2 years, 2 of them
broke down at the same time! It was very expensive to fix them. The parts for
one cost $32.93. The labor was $720.67! For the other one, the parts cost
$13.58. The labor was 570.00! One of those that was fixed is starting to do
shadow dots again. It took from March 2016 until August 2016 to get them back.
Luckily we had our 25 year old VersaPoints and were able to use them in the
meantime. Unfortunately, our computers can't hook up the Versapoints any longer.

Hi all! There are a couple of embossers that I am considering purchasing, I
just haven't made a decision yet. One is the Juliet 120, the second is the
index basic D version five, and the third is the Columbia from view plus.
Have any of you used any of these embossers? They all sound good, and they
all seem to have good qualities. How are they regarding durability? What
about set up an excess ability? Thanks in advance, Chelsea
