Ann,

You can create a template in the manner you described, but change the
Document settings rather than the Global settings.  Then, use your new
template when you create a new document, and you'll have the settings
you want.  I have a template like this for narrow paper, and it works
very well.  I wish I had thought to do it a long time ago.
