Hi Catherine,
I know there are DOS programs for converting Word files to ASCII text
because I used one. Unfortunately, I never transferred it over to my
Windows machine, and my DOS machine is long gone. The program worked
fairly well most of the time, but there were files it simply could not
convert, which was one factor in my decision to take the plunge into
Windows. I suspect this problem will get worse as we get further away from
DOS, and as newer versions of Word are developed. You might try using your
favorite search engine to look for programs that do this kind of
conversion, although I think you may have a hard time finding what you
need. Good luck.

The DOS computer I use to do my braille transcribing does not have MSWORD. This is not a problem for the majority of my work which is done from scanned print documents or from ascii text. However, occasionally, I have to convert a document from MSWORD to something that can be opened in WordPefect DOS. I have a DOS program called VIEW whichwill very successfully force such a document into plain ascii tect. Its main drawback is that it leaves in the MSWORD codes--all the stuff about how the document was prepared, what fonts, headings, printer etc. was used. Does anyone know of another method for coverting MSWORD docments without MSWORD or, alternatively, specific instruction to give customers so that they can send a document originally created in MSWORD in plain text?
