Hi Susan,

I believe this has to do with the fact that a lot of publishers use a "32-up" layout for production purposes, where many pages(32) are printed on a huge sheet of paper and then cut and folded in such a manner as to produce the linear format we are all presented with when we get a book. This layout does not produce the pages in a linear fashion on the sheet, but rather matches up the pages so that they can be cut and folded into packets and stitched or glued in to the binding. So page 1 is on the same piece of paper as the last numbered page for that packet, just folded at the binding.
So in order to get a useful file, the publisher will often need to completely redo the layout to get a digital file that reads linearly.
I have also heard people having problems with the software format used by the publisher, especially with math, chemistry and engineering books.

That's what I've been told. I also hear that often times a publisher will scan their printed book in order to get the linear file, rather than try to re-arrange the production layout file.

Hope this helps-

Hi guys,

I have a question about the definition of "Publisher's File." I had thought that what you wanted from the IMAA was to obtain the ACTUAL file the publisher had used to produce the book. This would be part of the "source once, publish many" paradigm being advocated in a variety of contexts, not just braille transcribing.

But reading Christine's interesting post about the APH File Repository got me confused. It sounds as though the publishers are producing files specifically for you after the fact. "The publisher typically goes with the vendor who can create the file in the desired timeframe at the lowest price." Except for possibly saving the braille publisher some money, I don't see how this is any improvement over scanning in a textbook yourself.
