Unfortunately, no; DBT doesn't handle that case well. DBT also shouldn't insert illegal characters into a document in the first place, so, if your document does have them, then I'd be curious how they got there; there could be another bug somewhere...

So, if it turns out to be my problem, when I copy and paste those characters into the search and replace feature, will they be found?

Are you sure the characters in your document are asterisks rather than invalid characters that DBT is displaying as asterisks? You can check this by turning on "Use verbose labels for non-ANSI characters in coded view" under Global, View Preferences, then entering coded view. If they are invalid characters, they will now display as something other than asterisks.
