Susan,
The subject of alternative symbols came up on the Paperless Braille list
recently. In addition to the tilde for dots 4-5 you can also create:
dot 4 using either the at sign (shift plus 2) or the accent grave key.
This key eliminates the dot 7 on the refreshable braille displays.
You can create dots 2-4-6 by using either the left bracket key or shift
plus the left-bracket key, eliminating the dot 7.
The right-bracket key creates dots 1-2-4-5-6 as does the shift plus the
right-bracket key eliminating the dot 7.
As a result of these alternative keys, the only remaining key of those
used to display the 63 braille characters on the standard keyboard that
would still show a dot 7 on the refreshable braille display is the
underscore which is used to create dots 4-5-6. According to an informed
source who dabbles in codes, there is a character somewhere in the
extended ASCII set that would produce dots 4-5-6 but it's too complex to
make it part of the standard braille table. Some Linux braille table for
brltty has already conquered this but I'm not up on how. I hope this info
benefits somebody while it bores all the other bodies.
