One thing to remember is with 99% of the consumer home internet connections the
up channel or channel facing the internet from your home is much smaller than
the down channel. For example, on Comcast, you might have 100 megabits of
service in the down direction but you only have 10 up so as a result you only
have a tenth of the bandwidth available in the direction your interested in.
Now also remember that Apple isn't uploading your music, I think they are
scanning the disk, finding music that matches and then referencing a pointer to
their copy, not uploading your copy. I'm not sure what they send on the wire
but it could be limited by this reduced size channel. If you detail what
provider and service you have I might be able to get specific for your case.

Just my guess
