Actually, it's worth pointing out that if you persevere, and don't worry too much if some of your early work is big and lumpy and ugly, and needs cleaning up with the grinder (linishing discs are good for that), you can learn eventually to weld even thin tube with a cheap, simple stick welder.


And there's never any of the cold-lapping problems that you can get with a MIG: looks good, but isn't really a joint at all.

With rods, you KNOW you've burnt well into the parent metal. The only problem is to catch the deft knack of not burning right through. But practice makes -- well maybe not perfect, but doable. Worth persevering. I've never used anything else for any of my bike/trailer projects. Cheers, Rh.
