I also had one thing I should have said yesterday when I seen this message, but
I didn’t have a chance too.
I know that someone had mentioned that aside from reading DASI, that it should
read PDF, and Epup as well.
along side reading PDF, it should maybe have a reasonable OR method, as I’ve
gotten some PDF that were photographs of the text, and some that were the text.
I have my Blaze EZ player which does handle it OK, but this would be a pretty
cool project.
Chuck , and some that were tet.

Hello,
I’m a little late entering this discussion, but I have a few thoughts on the
potential Perky project.
First, what class of users are we targeting? I’m assuming Braille users with
speech rather than Braille output. In addition, if we’re gearing it toward
the totally blind, a screenless device would be appropriate.
Next, from the user perspective, do we want a Linux feel, or a system which
runs under Linux but feels less geeky. LevelStar had such a system, but it
didn’t last long possibly due to outdated hardware.
Third, Self-voicing menus or a screen reader or perhaps a combination. I
think we want something that doesn’t require a huge learning curve, or we’ll
get very few takers. The way to do this is to keep the cost low, include
simple to use and learn apps and provide a pleasing user experience.
Remember that our primary competitors are basically Apple and the Android
world. For example, I writing this email on a Mac, but if I had a Perky with
a decent level of functionality I’d use that instead.
e able to read PDF,
