I'm firmly in the "physical buttons that can be operated by touch
alone are essential" camp, though perhaps a system that allows
background processes to be recording a lecture and doing real-time
speech-to-text while a text editor is taking input from a keyboard in
the foreground would be useful. Bonus points if say, the
speech-to-text produces a timed script such as would be used to soft
subtitle a video recording of the lecture, and manual corrections of
the script can be used to train the speech-to-text program, though
some of these features might not be appropriate goals for a Perky 1.0
firmware.
Granted, putting piespeakup on a vanilla Rasbian Lite, hooking up
earphones, a USB power brick, and my wireless USB keyboard is already
enough to make the Pi almost as versatile as an x86 desktop(I haven't
found a text-mode browser I like and Firefox is the only graphical
application I use), and even carrying my full-sized qwerty keyboard
around, the Pi is already vastly more portable than a laptop,, so the
only thing the Perky project might offer me is a wider selection of
easy to setup text-mode screen readers, improved support for running
GUI applications with speech, and maybe providing a more elegant
solution for powering the Pi when a wall socket is unavailable.
Though, if anyone knows where I can find a wireless USB mini keyboard
with a full main qwerty block, non-crippled navigation keys, and
suitable for touchtyping with large thumbs, I'd be happy to hear about
it. Carrying a full-sized desktop keyboard around is less hassle than
a laptop, but it still isn't ideal, and my experience with external
laptop-style keyboards is either they're too cramped for prolonged
typing or the navigation keys are severely impaired, and it seems like
every thumb typable keyboard is bluetooth, and why bother with that
hassle when I've got plenty of USB ports?
