Hi,
The reason you are not getting sound is an alsa bug. Try
Sudo rpi-update
Before doing that though, use aplay to play a file and check the pi logs for
alsa related entries.

Hi,
You are right. When I tried to install initially, I got no sound at all.
Also, if you did not have a monitor connected I got no audio. The only thing I
could get constantly working was to do it the way I outlined and every time it
came up speaking.
So, instead of people having struggle and give up I decided to write the steps
which also helps me in the future if I need to do it again.

While I'm sure there are some worthwhile things that could be added to
raspi-config in regards to accessibility, it sounds like the only reason Tango
is touching raspi-config in this tutorial is due to bugs in the default sound
configuration.
I mean, is there any reason the Pi shouldn't default to using it's internal
sound card in the absence of an external sound device?
Because it sounds like the current default is to search for an external sound
device and then just go mute if one isn't found.
Also, doesn't pretty much every other device with multiple sound outputs,
including a 3.5 mm jack, give priority to whatever's plugged into the 3.5mm? I
could understand automatically switching sound output to HDMI if there's a
speaker connected over HDMI and the 3.5mm is empty, but it sounds like the
current default ignores something being plugged into the 3.5mm jack even if
it's the only audio output in use.
Admittedly, I only have a Pi 2 and the Original 3, and it's been a while since
I've setup a Pi from scratch, so I might be misunderstanding some of what
others have said about their experiences with covid-era images on the Pi 4.
