That's right. But if you are accessing the Pi through SSH/Putty you will not
be able to use the graphical desktop. SSH only works via the terminal. So if
you are trying to start Orca or type commands to the graphical desktop
through SSH it will not work. Those commands should give you sound output.
It is also important to run spd-conf before starting Orca as it will create
a user-specific speech dispatcher configuration.
If you are not receiving any sound if you do espeak "hi" or spd-say "hi"
even after doing spd-conf do alsamixer and make sure the devices are turned
up and unmuted. This will require the alsa-utils package.
You can also do a quick and dirty reset with the command alsactl init.

software. It would appear that the only accessible way of installing
it is to enable SSH and install remotely using apt though and it
doesn't look like there's an easy way of enabling it for the first
time. Has anyone given it a go?
