I am delighted that the Raspbian folks have made this effort. I realize that
it's not a complete solution, but it might well be a good starting point for
one. And, given that Raspbian and Ubuntu are both based on Debian, it may also
bode well for the prospects of an accessible version of RasPi-based Ubuntu at
some point.
Although I've been following F123Light (and now StormOS) with great interest,
I'd be happier to have accessible RasPi solutions based on Raspbian and/or
Ubuntu. Raspbian is pretty much the Golden Path for the RasPi and Ubuntu seems
to do a good job of producing a system for non-technical users. Arch Linux
ARM, in contrast, seems to be trying to cover all possible ARM platforms, but
offers little support for either the RasPi or the Linux newbie.
As a sighted developer, I'd be happy to investigate GUI-based facilities and
help to find corresponding key sequences, etc. I can also work on folding some
of the packages I've been investigating for Perkify into an augmented version
of Raspbian. However, I'm basically clueless about how to use (let alone
configure) screen readers and such, so I'd need a lot of help from folks that
have these skills.
Here is the general approach I have in mind; comments and suggestions welcome!
- install the new version of Raspbian on a RasPi
- install Orca and various other a11y packages
- make the resulting image available for downloading
- make the build scripts and docs available on GitHub
- iterate (with help!) toward a complete solution
If you think having accessible versions of Raspbian and/or RasPi-based Ubuntu
is worth some effort, please let me know.
