[torontocbm] Re: New PSU for C64

There is another seller on eBay making custom PS that works great for me (Basic Wayne) but I know at least one member of this list have had serious problems with those. Now there might be flames and smoke, literally ;-). Just because of that I keep these PS disconnected when I'm not actively using them. The Sav64 device is a great insurance with a stock PS. But, if you need more amps for REU, even 1541Ultimate in some cases or other heavy extensions you have to go custom.

There's also the "SaV64" device which can protect your C64 from
overvoltages...I wasn't able to find an info page about it, there are
threads on the various forums about it, for example:

Thanks all for your help and thoughts on this subject.  For those who are
looking for a summary (if you're looking back at the torontocbm archive):

- apparently a number of you still use the original PSU without issue.

- ensure there is ample ventilation around the PSU (attaching feet to the
PSU will allow for better airflow underneath the unit)

- It is possible to use a modern "wall-wart" 5V 3A DC supply and a 9V 1A AC
supply and hack together a new PSU with the original PSU connector.  (See
Kevin Casteels posting to this thread for images)

- it is possible to rig a "crow bar" circuit to detect overvoltage and break
the circuit

- and lastly, the ever-resourceful Joe Palumbo has old stock of C64 PSUs if
you ever find yourself short of one

Until I come up with a better solution than just using the old PSU, I'll
limit how much time I have the C64 running to avoid PSU overheating (which
seems to be the cause of the issue, coupled with poor design).

Josh: I'm guessing it's less a matter of it being broken, more that
the Commodore PSUs have a terrible reputation for reliability and can
often fail in such a way that the computer gets damaged along the way.

Adam: A few people in Toronto did do a group buy on Sav64s a while
back to save on shipping, maybe more people are interested?

I've heard good things about the Ray Carlsen PSU, but don't have one.
(I personally use a C128 power supply with an adaptor box I built way
back to work with the 64.)

Cheers,
-Leif

Subject: [torontocbm] New PSU for C64

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a Canadian-friendly manufacturer who produces new PSUs
for the C64 or at the very least a "power saver"?  I know Ray Carlssn in
the
States gets excellent reviews but with the crappy dollar, shipping costs,
and customs fees, I was hoping there was somebody analogous here in the
Great White North.

Thanks!
