Oh, I didn't know about this. So I'm guessing the 5V regulator gives up and
dumps full unregulated power to all the little chips?
I was so paranoid about this on my Mark-8 replica, that I built a crow bar
circuit for it (it runs on +5V and -9V).
For anyone here that doesn't know what a crow bar is, it is a fused circuit
that monitors the voltage and shorts the supply line (to blow the fuse) in the
event of over voltage. Typically it's just a fuse, SCR, resistor and Zener
diode. If the voltage goes too high, the SCR reacts within nano seconds to
short the power supply, of course the fuse then burns out in a few milliseconds.
I like the wall wart solution, cheap and easy... probably don't need to change
the 9VAC, just the 5V ought to be enough for peace of mind. The nice thing
about those wall warts, they often use switching power supplies now and I've
never heard of a switching power supply failing with high voltage, always low
or no voltage.
Personally, I'm not a fan of hacking up these units, so perhaps I'll make a
crow bar circuit to go inline with the DIN connectors?

Josh: I'm guessing it's less a matter of it being broken, more that
the Commodore PSUs have a terrible reputation for reliability and can
often fail in such a way that the computer gets damaged along the way.
Adam: A few people in Toronto did do a group buy on Sav64s a while
back to save on shipping, maybe more people are interested?
I've heard good things about the Ray Carlsen PSU, but don't have one.
(I personally use a C128 power supply with an adaptor box I built way
back to work with the 64.)

Does anyone know of a Canadian-friendly manufacturer who produces new PSUs
for the C64 or at the very least a "power saver"? I know Ray Carlssn in the
States gets excellent reviews but with the crappy dollar, shipping costs,
and customs fees, I was hoping there was somebody analogous here in the
Great White North.
