Mark Johnson, Sandra Weigand, and I drove up to look for the Harris's Sparrow
this morning. We arrived about 10:15 AM and had no more than greeted the
homeowner than the bird appeared. Mr. Carpenter said the sparrow had been seen
a few hours earlier but not since until we arrived! We were fortunate as he
said someone waited over two hours yesterday and never saw the bird. The
homeowner is very accommodating; he has put lawn chairs under his car port so
you can sit in comfort to watch the feeders and shrubs along the edge of his
yard for the sparrow. A state bird for me, a year bird for Mark and a lifer for
Sandra.
Thanks to Larry Carpenter for his hospitality (and other nice birds in his
yard) and William Leigh for reporting this to VA-Birds.
