Hi Claire, Great message. It's amazing to me how many people in the birding community I run into who don't use ebird. It appears that we're content to bird, but have little interest in providing valuable data, or we don't understand how providing data informs policy decisions. Your message is certainly one way to get the word out. Thanks, Dave

Subject: [Va-bird] How to sign up for rare bird alerts in eBird

To have rare birds sent to you by email daily by eBird:

1. Sign into eBird. (If you have not already created an account, you will need to do this. Takes 1 minute.)
2. Hit the ï¿½Explore Data tab.
3. Down on the right side of the page - see ï¿½Alerts - click on that
4. Now youre on the ï¿½Manage My Alerts page. You have options.
5. Want to know whats rare in Virginia? Then, under where it says Rare Bird Alerts enter Virginia - click on Virginia, United States (US) when that pops up.
6. Want the info by email?  Then hit ï¿½subscribe

Youre now all signed up.
You can easily unsubscribe from the same page at any time.

Just want it for a county? Same process, just put in the county name.

Have needed birds for a state or county? Do the same thing under the Needs Alerts section of that page.

If any one needs help getting started with eBird, I would be glad to help you. I have been contributing data to eBird for 10 years. Scientists need data to inform public policies and conservation efforts that help birds. All data is useful whether from your backyard or some fantastic birding spot. If you love birds, please eBird.

Please participate in the Cornell Lab of Ornithologys Global Big Day on Saturday, May 9, 2015. For more information, see <http://ebird.org/globalbigday>
