Hi Brad,
the availabiltiy of the editing commands doesn't depend on whether you open or 
import an mp3 file.

Also when you were editing the mp3 file, did you import it from the file menu, 
or choose open from the file menu? By importing it I understand that you should 
be able to use all the editing commands.
