Dear Valerie,
 
All day you’ve been in my heart as I pondered what to say to give you any sort 
of comfort.
 
I’ve decided that comfort might not even be possible so soon after such a 
shocking loss of your life’s companion.
 
You and Doug were among the very few Bookshare volunteer couples like Susan and 
Larry Lumpkin, Mike and Lori Castner and me and Evan who have volunteered for 
Bookshare for many years in our unique fashion . I read several of Doug’s 
colorful and clear picture descriptions. Think of the children who will know 
what is in the pictures of their braille or audio books who would otherwise 
miss them entirely. The books the two of you gathered, arranged to have scanned 
and then proofread and described pictures for are a proud and permanent legacy 
now on offer to readers worldwide. I know this achievement as a couple will 
remain among the treasured memories in your heart of your time with your 
beloved husband. 
 
Doug didn’t write to the list often which is partly why I paid particular  
attention when he did. His posts were always polite and helpful. I’m sure you 
were proud of him for that.
 
Your life must be in chaos now as it has abruptly changed so drastically. Keep 
your friends close and let them help you. AS a fellow dog lover I know you’ll 
understand that your two sweet doggies will need your attention, comfort and 
reassurance for quite some time. In helping them you’ll feel their love in 
return.
 
I’m saddened that you and all of us have to go on without Doug. I’ll be keeping 
both of you, and the doggies too, close in my prayers.

Last night at about 9 PM, my beloved husband, Doug, passed away. It happened 
without notice; he was not sick and I was out grocery shopping. I am bereft. I 
cannot imagine my life without him, but I am grateful for 24 years of marriage 
and almost two more before that. Doug was an amazing man and a great blessing 
as a  Bookshare work partner. Please forgive me if I do not reply as there are 
many people to notify and arrangements to make.

 

Please keep me in your prayers as I enter this new chapter of my life, alone.  
It's been over 35 years since I lived alone.  Even our two sweet dogs can tell 
everything is different.
