Hi, Ann. I really like your idea of designating books in the system
that have picture descriptions. It could be useful both in making sure
those descriptions aren't lost and for teachers wanting students to do
assignments with picture descriptions. Your idea may be worth passing
on to Pavi or Carrie for consideration. I think the validaters have a
good idea of which books already have descriptions and could help
Bookshare make a list. I would feel a lot more comfortable with that
process than with the idea of having a Bookshare staff member read
every book in the collection to see if it should be replaced. A staff
member couldn't just use the Bookshare validation tool to tell her if
a book is truly excellent because that tool only looks for obviously
misspelled words. It can't look for the infamous die for the scanno or
the torn for Tom error that plagues some of our books. It also can't
handle the odd names in science fiction and some religious books. So I
think having a designation for books with picture descriptions would
help to preserve books that need it without bogging down the staff to
process nearly 40,000 books.
