Hi Cindy,
Yes a RETURNNEW with no comment means that a person released it or an
administrator kicked it back. It will have the expiration comment if the
validator ran out of time.
INVALID can be seen on the step 1 page when that book has had a
RETURNNEW action after a person rejected it. When a book is put back on step
1, its entire BookShare history is still there.
HTH,
Jake

O.K., Guys. Here's what I don't understand. If a book is put back on the download list with a note like confirm copyright holder or correct title, how can a person just do that if it's the original back on the download list? Jake, I did think it was the original--thanks for confirming my opinion--but if onlyh one thing is wrong, like the copyright name or title, and the original is put back on the step one list, then someone else has to start the validation process all over again before correcting the one thing wrong. This doesn't make sense to me.
As to rejected books being put back on the download list, I know that will happen if someone requests it. Gustavo was kind enough to do it recently for someone who had rejected it by mistake and for me wo wanted to validate a rejected book so it wouldn't be rejected.
I'm curious, too, as to where all those terms are, Jake. Some I've seen on the download list, but surely Publish isn't there, according to what it means. If the book is in the collection it won't be the download list. And Valid and Invalid--if the book had already been validated, why is it back on the step one list?
And I've seen Time Expired, so does Return New mean that the book was purposfully released by a would-be validator and Time Expired mean what it says?
As E has pointed out, it would really be helpful if there were a way a person who releases a book could explain why. Maybe a Comments section could be added so that when one hits Release he/she can explain. Just another suggestion for the engineers when they have nothing else to do. smile

Jake,
The DONEDONE action comes after the VALID action, not before since it's above the VALID action, so I still believe it's the tools like the Stripper and Duxbury, not the tools like the spell checker and adult content checker that are being run. We'll have to remember to ask about it sometime since that's the only way to find out what this one truly means.
Looks like you've included all the actions in your list. At least that's all I remember ever seeing.
BTW, I found an example of a book being kicked back after rejection. The book by Jocelyn Siler which has Book Title for the title has been kicked back twice, once after being accepted and once after being rejected.

Hi guys, In examining the sometimes cryptic messages the BookShare system logs here's a list:
SUBMIT: fairly self explanatory, the user submitted the book. EDIT: A volunteer has checked the book out for validation. VALID: A volunteer has validated the book INVALID: A volunteer has rejected the book. RETURNNEW: Gustavo/an administrator has placed the book back in the validation ppol, or a user has released the book or their allotted validation time has expired (in which case there is an expiration comment). DONEDONE: Since this generally appears before the VALID comment, I'm guessing this is the first part of the "Step 2" process. This is when the automated dictionary and adult content checker are executed. PUBLISH: This appears to be done when Gustavo/an admin puts the book live onto the site.
By all means point anything out you think I've got wrong, I'd be happy to look into it. If you run across any other messages, I'd love to speculate on them *grin*
Hope this helps someone... Jake ----- Original Message ----- From: "siss52" <siss52@xxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 11:00 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Submitted synopsis
