They're intended for different uses.

Auto-tune is an effect. You program a scale in to it, send vocals through, and
it snaps the pitch of the audio that comes through to the closest note in the
scale that it was given. It can correct the pitch quickly (like is used on lots
of pop stuff right now), or slowly (so that it helps the vocal without being so
noticed).

V-Vocal isn't an effect. It is a type of editor. When you open a vocal in
V-Vocal, you can edit the individual notes. Besides changing their pitches,
like Auto-Tune can do, you can move the starting time of notes without
disrupting the timing of other notes, you can stretch notes out, you can create
glides and swoops, you can add or remove vibrato, etc. If you don't cae about
putting an entire track through automatic pitch correction, but would rather
have the capability to fix a few bad notes or mistakes here and there, then
V-Vocal is the tool to use.

V-Vocal works best when you're using it to fix a little problem here or there.
It is quite time consuming to try to use it for programming/editing out an
entire vocal track. For that situation, you need Melodyne. Melodyne can be used
to take a monotone vocalist with horrible timing, and make them sound like
someone with amazing range, tight runs, and smooth vibrato, and excellent
timing. It is for making real-sounding vocals, not the robot stair-step effect.
It also works on multipart harmonies. That is, you can load 5 tracks of people
singing in to it, and use its editing features to perform a type of vocal
arranging by editing the pitch, timing, and other attributes of each vocal
part. It is the most advanced vocal editing tool that I know about, and the
results sound absolutely natural in the right hands. It is only partly
accessible, though.

Hi Phil and all,
Ok, sounds good. I have not heared the result of V-vocal, but how is it
compared to Autotune, is Autotune still better?
Many thanks,
Christian

V-vocal is fully supported by Cake Talking where as you can only automatically
fix notes with the .HSC scripts.

Subject: [ddots-l] A question about Caketalking

Hi all,
Just a question, is V-vocal supported by Caketalking?
Or are there any better alternatives for pitch correction that is accessible?
I am considering buying Caketalking, but just want to know.
many thanks,
Christian
