First of all, very jealous. I’ve always been a big fan of the C7. Have
you had a chance to check out the CFX in person. What a beast.
As far as virtual pianos go… I’m an addict for this stuff, so I figured I
should share a few of my thoughts on some pianos I’ve spent a decent amount of
time with...
Ivory has always struck me as a bit sterile. Playing the Ivory pianos has put
me in mind of playing a Yamaha Motif sampled grand on steroids. It’s not a bad
thing if that’s what you’re looking for, but for me, I’ve tended to lean
towards a more woody and natural sounding sampled piano.
Right now, I really enjoy the VI Labs pianos. They have a competitive
product to the Ivory product called True Keys. I enjoy the American and German
pianos in this product. I’m not a big fan of the Italian grand however. These
are the same guys that produce the Ravenscroft 275, which is a fantastic piano
as well. Very realistic, but also can be bright for my taste at times. The
key is to get a good velocity curve set, which of course requires sighted
assistance. I really appreciate the work VI Labs has done to capture the
release samples of the piano. All of the VI Labs pianos run in the UVI
Workstation which is a similar product to native Instrument’s Kontakt, but it
requires an ILok key to use.
One other piano worth mentioning is the Yamaha CFX by Garritan. This
piano is extremely good in my opinion. If you’re simply looking at the sound
quality and playability, I love this one. With the right pair of headphones,
this one just knocks me out every time. Now, the catch is the size and load
time for this library. it’s absolutely gigantic at over 150 gigs. I have it
stored and an external thunderbolt SSD, and it still takes up to 6 or 7 minutes
to load up. If I’m simply practicing, I’ll have this loaded up for the day.
One last piano I’ve had some fun with is the Cinesamples Piano in Blue.
This runs in the Kontakt player, so sighted assistance is needed to get it up
and running. But once you have it set, it’s well worth the hassle. This is
the Steinway used on the classic Kind of Blue recording by Miles Davis. I love
it mostly because it’s so unique. I find it particularly useful in softer
dynamic settings.
Alicia’s keys is still a go to for me, as it’s very compact and definitely
has that warm natural sound I like.

Speaking of, I actually sat down at the newest incarnation of the C7 on my
visit to sweet water a few weeks ago, man! What a beauty! I can only look
forward to the day I can just plop 78K down and bring 1 home lol. But that
piano just begs you to play it and make music on it.
But since this has spakred the convo, what other good libraries are out
there other than ivory? I have alicia's and the mavericks, a nice one from
NI as well, does anyone know of any other good ones?

Hi Neville,
I love that Alicia Keys piano as well. I think it's one of the best acoustic
piano libraries I've heard. I hear there's a couple of others out there that
are really good; one of them Being a Steinway. They both might be Steinways
- just different models.

Personally, I have not heard pianos better than the ones from the Kontakt
player. As a piano player myself, I can say that in my opinion I have not
heard any sampled piano that sounds more realistic.
I have ivory. I use to use it quite a bit. Until Steve Spamer developed
hotspots fort he Kontakt player. Now, Alicia Keys is my go to piano for
almost everything. I also enjoy the other three pianos that ship with the
player as well.
If you guys have heard something better than Alicia Keys, I would certainly
like to know about it. Being a piano player, this is what I value the most
since I don't have room to record a real piano in my small studio.
