Steve and all,the best investment I ever made was getting fitted for some custom earplugs. These are nothing like the cheap foam ones you've probably tried. They actually attenuate things fairly evenly across the spectrum, by a set amount - 9db, 15db, 25db are common values.
You need to first get molds taken by an audiologist. Then, these are sent to a lab who produce the earplugs. Your audiologist might have a local lab he prefers, or you can send the molds to someone like Etymotic.
