I am sure that the DBT team are already looking at this anomaly.
I have done some sleuthing and found that when you have chst followed by an "a"
DBT will cancel the "st" contraction.
Thanks for bringing this up Peg as I will add this to my list of "things to
double check" in a file.
Until DBT resolve the issue, the wordaround that I have found is to simply add
a dummy code such as [/] between the ch and st.

I'm with Peg, and Roger. I can't find any UEB rules that would prohibit use of
the 'st' strong groupsign in 'Birchstar'.
With some tinkering, I find that while DBT 12.2 does not use the 'st' strong
groupsign in 'Birchstar' it does use it in 'BirchStar' (that is, when the
interior 'S' is capitalised).
Taking a cue from Roger's test case of 'Matchstick' (where the 'ch' and 'st'
strong groupsigns are used) I find that DBT 12.2 also avoids the 'st' groupsign
with 'Matchstar' but uses it with 'MatchStar'.
With this in mind, perhaps DBT is interpreting 'Birchs' and 'Matchs' as one
word (though I woudn't hazard a guess why this is so) and 'tar' as another
word? With these as admittedly odd cases, if used together these would present
unhyphenated compound words, and that would be prohibited by UEB 10.11.1.
For what it's worth, BrailleBlaster 1.1.16.114 and Braille2000 2.273 translate
'Birchstar' and 'Matchstar' with consecutive use of 'ch' 'st' and 'ar' strong
groupsigns.
Also, FWIW, there is a UEB rule prohibiting a word made up of only lower
groupsigns in certain cases, but this certainly doesn't apply in the current
case.
