Pranav,

I'm not sure what you mean by "clean" the image. I'll describe how we're using it in a bit more detail.

We have used Infty Reader to assist with converting images processed via our tactile graphic software. In doing so, project staff have figured out the tricks of using this new OCR software to better capture math information.

The main thing our program does that's useful in terms of processing text and math within images, is that it removes that text or math to be processed as a separate OCR step. This means that the OCR software, whether Infty or something more mainstream, doesn't get confused by the graphic itself and produce excessive errors. More information on our project can be found at http://tactilegraphics.cs.washington.edu/

Hi Daniel,

How do you clean the image for use with Infti reader?

Math OCR has been a struggle for years. Mainstream OCR companies have not
solved the problem of getting accurate and useful math out of scanned
documents. I believe this is not only due to the fact that most of their
customers are not worrying about math, but also because of the different
methods used to write and display equations. The only solution we've found
is the InftyReader software. http://www.inftyproject.org/en/index.html --
It will save into LaTeX format, which allows for import into Duxbury. This
is the same format that Scientific Notebook uses.

It's quirky, but InftyReader can definitely help, esp. with upper level
math texts. If you're doing a lot of math, it's worth climbing the
learning curve.

I use the Scientific Notation program for Algebra too, and it's
working very well, saving to Duxbury then translating to Braille.
However, I can't find a way to scan a page and save it to Sci. Not. If
anyone knows how to do that, it would save me some time. (Although I
know it won't scan a lot of the math properly, but it could do the text
so I don't have to type so much.) Maybe Susan could help with that too.
