That should give a good 54 tracks to play out on the last night.

From a technical point of view, I don't think we need to get overly excited
around the security issues of Zoom. I get why you wouldn't want to conduct
your sensitive business meetings with it for those reasons but for what we
want it'll probably be fine. Can't add much more on the subject, I've been
involved as a participant in a couple of them now but have never set one up.
Suspect it's fairly easy though.
Simon may well have a point re audio quality, I found when setting up
Teamviewer for the remote studio access thing that it's pretty poor where
music is concerned, being more geared up for voice conferences which don't
need such high bit rates. Zoom may well be set up in a similar vein but I've
no experience to confirm or deny this. Obviously won't affect what is going
out "over the air" mind just what the participants hear.
Sarah raised this idea prior to the broadcast, we had a brief email chat as I
raised a possible alternative (if you weren't fussed about video) about it
outside the group but I'll summarise it here:
At the back of the guide I produced for DJ's remoting into the studio is a
section on an alternative audio setup using some software called "mumble"
which was included there to improve the DJ's audio link to the studio. It's
basically a low latency audio chat system (think Zoom without the video but
(probably) higher quality audio).
The server is all set up here, downside is everyone needs to install the
client software - I can lift from this guide but it's added complexity so
Zoom may be easier from that perspective. Plus I think having video might be
quite nice for everyone who's been involved this year to see each other....

I have used Zoom once when the DLWP had a staff meeting following
lockdown. Twenty four people 'attended' and it went very well. Many of
the people were not computer literate yet we all installed the app and
connected to the meeting. Once Zoom id installed, a meeting is easy to
access by a simple meeting ID sent out by the organiser. A great tool I
thought but their is one problem. The ease of access is its downfall.
Security is very poor. The only thing preventing anyone and his wife
accessing it is the code.
We are not allowed to use it at work or for work related matters.
You may have heard in the news recently, there was a group called the
'tum de dum society' (or something similar), an Archers fan club. They
published a meeting ID on twitter for one of their on-line get
togethers. Big mistake. Loads of people outside the group logged in
exposing themselves, all sorts of porn , whatever. They had to close
the meeting. We obviously do not want that!
Using Zoom therefore hinges on whether you can have two tiers of
access, one tier that can view but not participate (our audience) and
another (us) that can do both.
The meeting needs to be controlled so in our DLWP meeting, the chair
asked everyone to mute (otherwise the sound is chaotic). Then if you
wanted to speak, you raised your hand and would be invited by the
chair. This worked very well indeed.
I'm not sure Zoom will support music quality audio. It may be better in
any case to feed Zoom audio to our stream as part of a 'programme' of
music, so zoom sound is invited in rather than be the main programme
output itself. Obviously the Zoom part is only valid for those with a
PC or phone so we would need to remain aware that not everyone would be
able to see.
How about this as an idea. We could do a sort of 'juke box jury'. Play
a few new songs perhaps and talk about them, voting 'hit' or 'miss with
coloured cards , red/blue or something. We would all have to be
forewarned at least of who the bands were, if not the songs, so we
could do a bit of research beforehand.

As we're over half way through the broadcast I thought I'd raise the
subject of what we want to do on the final night, Friday 29th May.
We've left the programme schedule free for the final 5 hours just in
case.
I know it was briefly mentioned a while ago about trying to do
something a little different during the final hours of the
broadcast.
I seem to remember that some kind of Zoom (or similar) event was
mentioned that we could be try to do, which may enable some DJs to
get involved who haven't been able to do live shows this year, me

most popular way of going about this atm, so if anyone has any info
about how you go about using it, or any alternative options, please
let us know.
How would we broadcast our possible Zoom chat so it fitted in with
the music, and so listeners could see us?
One problem with Zoom, as I understand it, is that it cuts out after
approx 40 mins unless you have a Pro account, which I presume you
pay for.
I think it would be great if we could do something along these
lines, even if it's for just a portion of the evening.
Of course, one difference to previous final nights is that we don't
actually have to finish at midnight....
One idea I did have as to how to actually end the broadcast would be
to play out the whole of 'Dark Side of The Moon', something we did a
few years ago when we finished with the Top 50 albums.
That went down very well, and it might be good to do that again as
we're not bound by our usual 'restrictions'.
Obviously someone would need to play it out via their CD player, but
I'm sure that's easy to sort out.
Just a thought.
It would be good to get this sorted, as best as possible, so that we
can start to announce it. Although I think if we did decide to play
out DSOTM, that we keep that bit under our hats until the time
comes.
Any thoughts, or other ideas?
