To select messages use shift up and down arrow. Fora noncontiguous selection
use vo up and down then vo enter on any messages you want to select. The mail
app is not by any means clunky. For me I grasped it within in minutes of
getting my mac 6 years ago. I had no choice in the matter by the way.
