Nancy,

I have done this. It is very violent.   Make sure you do a trial run after 
school with students around.    Then you can decide if you wish to do it in 
front of a class.

But after you do it, you will have to guard your supply of potassium chlorate 
very carefully forever!
Especailly since   gummy bears are so easy to get.    Personally with today's 
society, I would not risk the liability issues that could arise if students 
get inspired to try this on their own.
