I agree with all the comments posted about safety – I also had a colleague burn her hand on this demo – but I still love to do it. The kids LOVE it and you just don’t get the same reaction from a video. I personally have never had any problem with it. However, take your time and set it up carefully. You don’t need a lot of potassium chlorate to make a great flame out, and if you do it in a hood with the kids looking on from the other side, and wear a glove I think it is safe enough. I have the test tube attached to a clamp on a stand, pointing at a 45 degree angle towards the side wall of the hood. As the Bunsen burner decomposes the chlorate, it becomes liquid and the white smoke moves up the tube. This is the best time to drop in the gummy. I also enjoy pointing out the bright purple color of the flame that is a result of the excited electrons in the potassium. You can see it much better in this than in the traditional flame tests.
