Try this, its well done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gDCSwTV1Sg to find others search for gummy bear sacrifice Lois Ongley _____ From: neact-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of David Olney Sent: Sat 1/3/2009 3:06 PM To: neact@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [neact] Re: potassium chlorate and gummi bear A variation I used many years ago was to heat KClO3 (to a depth of 1/2 inch or so) in an ignition tube, until it just melts. (Have the tube mounted quite vertically). Then deliberately turn off the burner, count down 5-4-3-2-1, and drop an UNLIT wooden spint into the tube. As Cary relates, it burns violently, even as 2nd and 3rd do. I labelled it "what if I didn't DIDN'T use a catalyst?!", referring to the classic O2 gas preparation. I guess the use of MnO2 there makes the gas production go with less heat needed, so promotes safety. And the kid that's most obnoxious that day gets the job of washing out the tube when things have cooled down ! But I think in this day and age I'd not do the demo live with students about, especially using sugar like in a gummi bear, for all the reasons others have cited already. A better bet would be to do it on camera and show the tape when desired. ----- Original Message ----- From: nancyjeanward@xxxxxxx<mailto:nancyjeanward@xxxxxxx> To: neact@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:neact@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, January 02, 2009 10:54 PM Subject: [neact] potassium chlorate and gummi bear Hello. I am contemplating doing a demo with gummi bear and potassium chlorate; however, I am a bit chicken. Could you give me any info on this? Has any one done this?
