I did this every year, kept the reaction in the hood, used just a small scoop of pot. chlorate in a test tube attached to the ring stand. When it melted, I turned off the bunsen burner, added the gummi bear and voila, it is a great white light! I also tried it with peeps, an even better reaction, because there is more sugar. I wear goggles and don't let the students get closer than about 3-4 feet from the hood. It is a great example of a decomposition and combustion two step reaction. I am contemplating doing a demo with gummi bear and potassium chlorate; however, I am a bit chicken. Could you give me any info on this? Has any one done this?
