16 birders joined Ed Eder and us today for the weekly avian
survey of Belle Haven picnic area and marina and Dyke Marsh (Haul Road).
All are welcome on this walk, sponsored by Friends of Dyke Marsh, which
meets at 8:00 AM every Sunday except for during Christmas Bird Counts and
Federal Gov't shutdowns.
The fog was so thick at 8:00 am that we reversed the traditional order and
birded Haul Road first, then surveyed the Potomac from the picnic area. As
hoped, the visibility was much better.
The birding was never boring. Highlight was probably an Eastern Phoebe,
seen by all. Molly had a glimpse of a Wilson's Snipe at the end of Haul
Road, but it was gone by the time others could get on it.
Quick stops at Hunting Creek before and afterwards added Greater
Yellowlegs, Belted Kingfisher, Wood Duck, and Green-winged Teal to the
morning tally, yielding a total of 56 species.
