Another wet day of birding. Six of use battled wind and rain during the weekly
walk Dyke Marsh, sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh. The walk starts at 8
and is open to all. We managed 46 species. A highlight was the steady stream
of Bonaparte’s gulls, heading up river into the wind in groups of 10 to 20.
Some groups passed close to shore, giving us fabulous looks as they somehow
glided into the wind. Two perched on the floating platform in the marina,
giving us leisurely loos. Other notables were the 2 red-necked grebes in the
marina and then off the boardwalk, both approaching breeding plumage. We also
saw 10 horned grebes in plumages ranging from winter to full breeding. From
the Haul Rd. we saw a group of 5 snipe feeding in the mud. Another notable
sighting was the breeding plumage common loon that landed off the boat launch
in the marina. One sign of spring (sorely missing today) was a fully yellow
goldfinch. Another was a pair of nuthatches working on a nest. The complete
