The weekly walk at Dyke Marsh in Alexandria, sponsored by the Friends of Dyke
Marsh, was attended by 7 folks who enjoyed a beautiful morning. The migrants
have passed and we were treated to local breeders, EXCEPT for a surprise
Mississippi kite. A sub-adult, I first saw it land in a tree in the picnic
area about 15 minutes before the walk started. It was gone by the time we
gathered, but about an hour later we saw a sub-adult kite (presumably the same
bird) circling low over the picnic area. No other surprises, but we got great
looks at Baltimore and orchard orioles, warbling vireo, yellow warbler, and
osprey chicks. An odd sight was a great blue heron swimming in the river like
a weird swan. The complete list is below.
