Ya gotta realize, though: album and song sales are not where the artist makes their money. It's in the show. If you want to be successful, you've gotta gig!

Hi Justin,

the majority of people listen to live performance with their eyes.
They love to watch the musicians hands.

All live music is a little on the slow side simply because when money is tight, entertainment is one of the first cut backs.

I too perform live for my bread and butter.
I perform a tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis (a piano playing Rock 'N' Roll Performer from the 1950's) My performance is not in your league, however, it's good enough to give me a fare wage.

I think band in a box has it's place in recording studios and whatever people think, it's not going to go away, it'll just get better.

It's not for me but then I don't use drum loops either, I like the fact that everything you hear that I've done was all created by me.

True true, I'd still like to see a little more security in the performance world as that is my main bread and butter. We'll just have to wait and see how things go.

Hi.

On the upside, if live playing becomes somewhat of a novelty, real music

Ah, I just watched the whole thing. I'm a little reassured that its at
least aimed at folks that want to practice with it. That's totally cool. Its just like using a ultra customizable Jamey Aebersold, +1 type of thing. Like a lot of things coming out today, I think they're all great tools and can be very effective if used in the right way. Its just a little scary to
think of all the ways it could go wrong.
Phil, I think you got it when you said that people will want to see
real musicians as a special event. That is both scary and sad for me.

Hi.

I think it all comes back to what a recording artist does with the tool.

For example, you could use the real tracks to generate a full
production, which is probably a good idea for structuring your song.

Or, you could record your track as normal, then add a real tracks
bassline or sax riff just to give that extra something.

A lot will depend on the imagination of the user.

Better producers and musicians will find the most inventive ways of
putting it to use.

This is all very fascinating, and quite disturbing at the same time.
I think its great that technology is bringing this sort of stuff
along, but can't help but think that music is about interaction. I
think a big part of the equation gets thrown out when its all
prerecorded, even by great musicians. I feel like performing can be
so much rewarding when you are actually interacting with others. But,
hey, whatever works for ya...
With that said, I think these sort of things do look like great
shedding tools.

Something about this just disturbs me.

If we're talking about Band-in-a-Box with realtracks and realdrums,
those
are cunningly strung together loops of professional musicians.

I can only speak from experience playing jazz against Band-in-a-Box
as a
practice tool. Personally, it's nice knowing that the realdrums jazz
styles were recorded by one of the best jazz drummers in the world, Terry
Clarke.
If you want to develop good swing feel, listen to Terry. It's
certainly better than the robotic rigid sort of swing you would
develop with older versions of the program, if you wern't careful.
