Well, I break this rule all of the time as I do covers as an engineering
exercise to see how close I can get to the original sound of whatever.
Learned a lot that way, but they're not intended for public consumption.

Wow, thanks for that.

I actually have the same kind of view.  If you're going to make a cover the 
same as the original almost note for note, just get a karioke backing track 
and add the vocal.
