A library like Ivory is recorded dry. Listening to it is like listening to a piano that you directly recorded from mics. Pianos from a workstation are already equalized, compressed, and layered with effects like reverb to make them fairly close to how you'd want them to sound in a mix. You can get the piano libraries to sound as good, and better, but you need to know what you're doing, and use a fair amount of processing. The workstation presets don't require that you know much of anything about how to mix piano. For many people, that's the way to faster results. I put it side by side, as you might say, with a yamaha p120 electric piano, and I can tell you that I, and my recording partners, all agreed that the yamaha certainly sounded warmer and more full. Now, i probably could have eqed the eastwest sample to get warmer, but we're talking "straight from the factory" here. I know Ivory has been discussed on this list, but I don't recall how accessible it is with jaws. Most of the higher softsynths aren't accessible, so you can't edit the sounds the way you want, which is why you won't get strings or brasses sounding the way you do in a hardware synth. The demos you hear of these instruments are done with sounds already edited, layered, etc by technicians from the manufacturers; which is why they sound as great as they do in the demo. ----- Original Message ----- From: Blake Hardin <mailto:blakehardin5487@xxxxxxxxx> To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Sunday, April 04, 2010 3:40 AM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Omar straight from the factory There is not a hardware synth on the market that i know of that can touch ivory grant or art vista for pianos. The kurzweil is very good at pianos but there just different sounding. The motifs sound to digital to me but i know they are supposed to have some very good expantion boards and those pianos sound really good from what i have heard. But, i guess you just can't beat a 40 gig sampled library of pianos verses maybe a 30 meg hardware sample.
