Ivory sounds pretty screaming out of the box and you can edit stuff witih a
little work. Although, you probably wouldn't want to.

I've never used ivory, but I have the 1gb sample of the bozendorfer Grand
from EastWest, and I played it through VSampler and tried it in a recording
recently. I put it side by side, as you might say, with a yamaha p120 electric
piano, and I can tell you that I, and my recording partners, all agreed that
the yamaha certainly sounded warmer and more full. Now, i probably could have
eqed the eastwest sample to get warmer, but we're talking "straight from the
factory" here. I know Ivory has been discussed on this list, but I don't recall
how accessible it is with jaws. Most of the higher softsynths aren't
accessible, so you can't edit the sounds the way you want, which is why you
won't get strings or brasses sounding the way you do in a hardware synth. The
demos you hear of these instruments are done with sounds already edited,
layered, etc by technicians from the manufacturers; which is why they sound as
great as they do in the demo.

There is not a hardware synth on the market that i know of that can
touch ivory grant or art vista for pianos. The kurzweil is very good
at pianos but there just different sounding. The motifs sound to
digital to me but i know they are supposed to have some very good
expantion boards and those pianos sound really good from what i have
heard. But, i guess you just can't beat a 40 gig sampled library of
pianos verses maybe a 30 meg hardware sample.
