Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. You rated the vsts above the motif, but doesn't the
fact that you had to put plugins and fx on the vsts sort of contradict the
title of this post "Straight from the factory?" The initial argument was that
coming straight out the box, hardware sounds better than software. Just a
thought.

  Hi Omar,

Well, I said I'd report back after using VST's on my live Gig.

It was a lively gig, I have a 2500 watt sound system, and it was working hard.

Here's how the different softsynths rated against my Yamaha Motif.

  1: Bass Guitar.
I used Dimension Pro's Full Fingered bass guitar, I put it through a few
effect pluggins.
This made the bass guitar very punchy and quite warm sounding.
It just needed a little more bass Eq, to make the bass bins work for there
money. I know what EQ pluggin to use to make the necessary changes so,
I give VST bass guitar 7 out of 10,
The Motif Bass guitar I used to use 6 out of 10.

  2: Drums.
I used Superior Drummer, I put it through a few effect pluggins. The snare
had Sonitus Compressor Vintage DBX plus Sonitus Gate.
I put a few processors on some of the other drums and the whole Kit sounded
amazing!
I give VST Drums 8 out of 10,
Motif Drums that I used to use 7 out of 10.

  3: Strat guitar.
I used Sonivoxmi Strat VST, plus I also used a Strat sample from the DSF
Guitar and bass pack.
I simply combined the two by copying the info from one track to the other.
Sonivoxmi Strat for the realism of the sound and the DSF strat to give the
guitar much more attack and a fuller body.
Once again sending both samples through several effects, one of them being a
Modulator to give the guitar samples a bit of fluidity, I ended up with a
fairly convincing Strat guitar.
I give the VST Strat Guitar 8 out of 10.
The Motif I used to use 4 out of 10.

  4: Horns.
I used VST Dimension Pro Tenor Sax, Dimension Pro Auto Sax, Dimension Pro
trumpet Shake and a Trombone from the Proteus 2000 pack.
The trumpet shake from Dimension is quite affective but it's so so weak
sounding, I had to give this some bight and body by having the Trumbone from
the Proteus play the same high notes as the Trumpet Shake.
The Tenor sax is playing in the correct octave as so is the Auto sax.
All Horns sent through many effect pluggins, the whole Horn section does
sound quite convincing.
I give my VST Horns 7 out of 10.
Motif Horns I used to use 5 out of 10.

When I first had Sonar, I really was beginning to believe I'd made a mistake.
I now realise that it was the best move I made, and I'm still only touching the
surface with the possibilities.

Interesting gigs coming up as I'm Playing Piano and helping with musical
arrangements for a Rock 'N' Roll tribute Show.
I've insisted that I use my backing tracks to start the Show and The band
Join me just before the Buddy Holly tribute enters the stage.
Although I've finally got the softsynths to take on the Motif, I don't think
I have the quality of softsynths to stand up against a real live band.

If any of you from the UK live near Bognor Regis, the Impressions of the 50's
Show is in your town for two nights.
Appearing at the local Theatre on Sunday April 11th , for a Sunday Matinee
Show.

    Hi Steve,

I haven't used vsts in live settings, but I know, for recording purposes,
I'm not a believer in most of the orchestral stuff you get with them.

      Hi Omar,

Well I'm about to find out whether VST's can cut it live.
Tonight is my first gig where I'm just using VST sounds.
I'll soon find out whether they have the same impact as the Motif, as all
my previous tracks were recorded using the Motif.

These VST's have been put through so many processors, I wouldn't be
surprised if they were suffering with a little travel sickness?

Will let you know how I got on.
