I agree with Alan on this.

The global setting should enable us to set what are our global parameters
for each embosser we like to use - the settings which Duxbury assumes are
the maximum parameters, not the commonly used parameters.

Having read George's solution, I have now set up templates, but would still
prefer to be able to simply choose my embosser of preference and not have to
manually change the settings.

The current system, is really only designed for a single user, single
embosser. It is not designed to suit the multi-user, multi embosser
environment.

On another note: It would be good to be able to setup a default place where
files are saved, rather than Duxbury use the last directory which you used.
I like to work in subfolders - subject area, textbook name etc and it is
very frustrating to have to double check where Duxbury is looking etc.

Just some thoughts from a new Duxbury user.

Kathy

Mornin' all

In all deference to Georges "round the houses" template solution, which no
doubt works but sounds like it will take longer than changing the embosser
settings and is after all just a work-around, until Duxbury does something
about the illogical, convoluted and drama ridden global vs document embosser
setup tug-o-war these problems will persist (how much traffic on this list
is about embossing problems?).

I've tried, and as far as I know there is no way you can make any changes to
the GLOBAL parameters "stick" . they always re-default to some useless
pre-set settings, so each time you change your DOCUMENT embosser you end up
with those silly none-sense parameters again. We run 4 embossers and I
personally have had a gut full of fighting with the stupid programme about
them. I've given up and just use the one embosser now (another, not ideal,
work-around!!!).

How about just making the Global embosser settings user-definable per
embosser so each time it is selected in the document embosser set-up it
drags in the RIGHT parameters (read user) rather than some useless factory
pre-set.

I know it is all supposed to be to do with embedding the embosser parameters
in the saved file which works very nicely when re-loaded to do re-prints,
but that doesn't explain why the global parameters won't stick.

Please enlighten me . 'cos, as usual, I've probably got it all wrong (I do
that a lot you know):-)

Whew . that feels better, as I say this is an on-going saga for me (and many
others).

Alan

PS I seem to remember all this coming up before and it was suggested as a
fix to change emb.elt . wouldn't it be better to fix the program rather than
having the user try to do some RE-programming?

Would like to hear suggestions also. This has just happened to me too! And
I am having a dickens of a time making it stick. I am tempted to return to
the old one just to avoid the headache. Every second counts this year in
getting these materials out and fast!

This is a problem we also have here at RNZFB. We have three identical
embossers, and as soon as you change to a different one the document
embosser settings default to 44, 27. If anyone has a solution that would be
wonderful.

We have just moved onto Duxbury from Megadots and as such purchased Duxbury
10.5

We have 2 embossers which are connected to our system and each is used as
often as the other, depending on the type of material being produced.

My dilemma is:

When trying to set up the Global Embossers I can have both embossers listed
as Brailler Devices, but seem to be able to only set the Desired Braille
Document Formatting on one of them - this one becoming the embosser of
choice for new documents. As soon as I try changing the settings on another
one, that one reverts back to the suggested settings which are nothing like
we use.

This means that everytime I want to select the other embosser in my Document
Setup, I have to manually put in the Desired Document Formatting for that
embosser.

Can I globally set up more than one embosser with our Standard Parameters,
so that I can then select either one in the Document Setup without having to
check whether or not the line width, number of lines, top margin etc are
correct.
