Just to tie together the original question about text editors and the later ones about file formats, you can open a .brf file in any text editor, including NotePad. You can even edit the file although that would generally not be a good idea as you'd likely mess up the document formatting. If you are sighted, you can choose to view a .brf file using either a text font, such as Courier New, or a braille font, such as Duxbury's SimBraille. One practical reason for opening a braille file in a text editor is if there are some parts of the braille file that you want to copy and paste into another document. This could be either a print document with braille examples or a dxp file where you want to put some Grade 0 braille.
