my situation is the same. Do you know if it is happening to older macs? My neck
is a 2010 MacBook Pro.

Yest it is odd.
A couple of months ago afriend rang me to complain that he was suddenly
having this issue on his Mac Air. At the time I did not have the issue
either. I thought it was something he was not understanding as I was not
then getting this problem. A few weeks later then hey presto I found that
the same thing started all of a sudden happening to me also after one of the
updates.
My Mac is set to start without a need for log on as was his Air. Yet still
the Mac is pausing without speech during updates to demand a log on.

I have not had the exact same problem. Since installing El Kapitan though
I have found that maintenance OS updates
have oddly started introducing an unspoken and unexpected log on screen
during the middle of an update process.
This did not arise when I had previous OS versions. Whilst this logon
screen is initially clunky with a button masquerading as a group i did
find that Voiceover would come on with command F5 in the normal way.
Why Apple have started introducing log on screen during update which do
not have VO speaking, even if it is the system default is a bit of a
mystery for me.

I had somebody come to look at the computer yesterday to make sure I
knew what was going on. Apparently it was updating and needed my Apple
ID and password. However, voiceover was not speaking that. I thought,
during updating, voiceover would still speak to me. At least I think
that is what happened before. Has anybody had this problem? I did push
the command to get VoiceOver to speak but nothing happened. Once
updating was over it came up talking.

Try booting into the recovery system with command r and hold it down
while powering your mac. And hold it for 30 seconds. Do a disk repair
and all of that in disk utility. If that does not work I'm afraid your
mac might be shot. It's 6 years old after all.

command F5 or Function key command F5 should get VoiceOver started if

My 2010 MacBook Pro is not booting up. When I turn it on I hear the
hard drive spinning but it does not get to the login screen. I sort of
remember the procedures for this type of problem. Can somebody go
through the steps I need to get it up and running again? I also have
an external drive that I have been backing up to. Also do I need to
turn voiceover on or will it come on by itself? I thought the command
was control r or something. I am running the latest software. This all
started because iTunes was acting funny and I decided to shut the
system down and restart.
