Hi guys, keep it simple for a novice like me. Something basic that will hold a
lot of music and is easy to use.

I love my western digital elements drives. Nice and quiet and fast. and this
thing has been on for almost 2 years straight and it has hardly gotten warm. it
is a 2 tb drive that holds about 900 gigs of music. Works grate.

Should be a couple hundred per gig maybe a bit better if you shop it around.

I use samsung drives for backups and rebuilds. to me, very reliable. have used

something shocking) rather nasty...

depending on storage needs, performance, etc. samsung 2.5" hdd's do perform
rather well. but I've been spoilt by SSD drives and wouldn't go back.

We literally would have smoke poor out of drives or even have flames in some
cases, especially early on. I was running a net news (NNTP) server on Sun
Sparc hardware and we were trying to find a home for 100+ gigs per day of
mostly binaries and pics although we took the full news feed. (over 32,000
groups) Disk access was so continuous across the whole array it sounded like
white noise almost or tens of computers at full boot hitting their disks as
fast as they could. I was happy to sell off that part of the business, lots of
hardware burn for little money.

The only thing to watch out with WD is they ship some shady batches at times.
They are good about replacements though and as mentioned, the customer service
is quite good. I used to find IBM the best back in the day, WD drives would
burst in to flames on my news servers, but most would do to the seriously high
load. Especially for external drives WD is a pretty good option.

Never thought I would see this day, but it has come. For once I have to agree
with David. Western digital are the best JMO. I have 2 network attached
storage devices by them, and 2 external USB hard drives. One of which I am
running a copy of mavericks on. And none have ever failed me. Not saying they
are perfect, cause nothing is. But my experience with WD has been better than
with anyone else's brand. Great customer service too, and gives 2 to 4 years
warrantee on their products depending on what size it is. HTH

H andy,

I guess this depends on how much music you have and what the size of the hd in
the mbp is. almost all external usb hds are good. you can't go wrong with
western digital as a start.

Hi all, I am thinking of transferring my music cooection onto my
macbook pro. To safe memory would it be better for me to save this collection
on anexternalstorage device? If so can anyone tell me which would be more
compatible with the macbook?

Thanks

Andy
