I agree with scott on this. Crucial produce a 960gb ssd which is the upgrade to 
my M4 512gb for over £400. if you wanted near 4tb storage, that's £1600 or so 
for drives, then a suitable workstation storage solution (rack or desk mounted) 
for a reasonable sum. factor in the RAID configuration of those drives and 
watch them fly.

SSD these days is the way to go. I have a mac mini in the workshop running the 
same tools as my mbp, the difference in performance is noticeable considering 
that the mbp uses a 512gb SSD from crucial as the master, the workshop machine 
has a 5400rpm 1tb samsung drive installed (a bargain at the time) and 8gb ram. 
still slow booting because of the HDD installed.

my SSD allows quick booting at 10 seconds flat on the MBP considering I'm 
running 10.8.5 server. love it to bits.
