We literally would have smoke poor out of drives or even have flames in some 
cases, especially early on.  I was running a net news (NNTP) server on Sun 
Sparc hardware and we were trying to find a home for 100+ gigs per day of 
mostly binaries and pics although we took the full news feed.  (over 32,000 
groups)  Disk access was so continuous across the whole array it sounded like 
white noise almost or tens of computers at full boot hitting their disks as 
fast as they could.  I was happy to sell off that part of the business, lots of 
hardware burn for little money.
