I had a used $250 36V Cloud Electric brushless  motor hub

which I tried both on my tourer and python. The 3 lead batteries mounted above the rear 26" wheel made the python behave a little funny (a lighter battery http://www.gmbattery.com/English/ProductView.asp?ID=92&SortID=101 
 would be better) ,
but the main issue was that 400W is really just an assist for a 205lb rider; on low speed 8% climbs they do not deliver nearly full power - which is what I wanted. - I don't need a motor for flat parts of the commute. Either a low-geared motor or a flux vector drive controller is needed to have an efficient climbing vehicle. My next project along these lines is a powered Bob trailer, a company in California used to make electric ones but no longer does. My new SWB

is commuting nicely, and both it and the tourer could simply hook up a trailer, geared low for climbing. I you mount lead batteries on your python, experiment with placement - the rack above the wheel might not be best.
