Hello everyone!
Just an update on the field trip...
Our family will be leaving for Hatteras, NC this weekend, so unfortunately I
will not be able to attend Saturday's field trip. As a result, there will
likely be no carpooling from the Adventure Science Center, although you are
welcome to coordinate amongst yourselves. Please meet at the Dunkin' Donuts at
exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) off I-24 at 7:30 AM. It's about 30 minutes
from Nashville to this exit. Directions are simple. Take I-24 West toward
Clarksville for approximately 23 miles. Merge onto exit 24 for Pleasant
View/Springfield, and turn left onto Highway 49. The Dunkin' Donuts is just on
your right after crossing the bridge.
Once again, cancellations will be posted on Friday evening if needed.
Fill up on coffee and donuts, and get ready for some great birding! Wish I
could be there!

The next NTOS Field Trip is this Saturday, March 14th. We will be birding
Robertson County, which has thousands of acres of scenic farm land. These
fields are home to Horned Larks and Eastern Meadowlarks year 'round, and in the
winter they attract American Pipits, Lapland Longspurs, White-crowned Sparrows,
Savannah Sparrows, Northern Harriers, and, occasionally, Vesper Sparrows,
Loggerhead Shrikes, Short-eared Owls, and Merlins. We will explore several
quiet, infrequently traveled farm roads by car looking for these species. A
highlight will be an optional walking excursion to Cedar Hill Swamp, one of the
few remaining upland swamps in Tennessee, where we will see Red-headed
Woodpeckers and look for Rusty Blackbirds and the locally rare Brewer's
Blackbirds. Please note that the trip to the swamp will involve walking on and
viewing from an active railroad track; appropriate footwear is a must. We will
meet at 7:00 am at the Adventure Science Center and carpool to the Dunkin'
Donuts at Exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) on I-24 where we will join Tony
Lance, who will lead the trip. The outing should finish shortly after midday,
so be sure to bring a lunch and drinks. Maps and further field trip info can be
found here at the new NTOS website. All are sincerely invited to attend!
Any cancellations will be posted the evening before the trip.
