First, the reason that you have latency is because your buffer setting on the
ProjectMix is too high. When you install, it defaults to some high number like
256 or 512, as those are safe to work on any system. Go to the M-Audio Firewire
control panel, go to the hardware tab, and decrease the latency. If you're
using Jaws, you need to be sure that you're set to show all graphics. Then,
with the Jaws cursor, find the line on the hardware tab that says 256, 384,
512, etc. On the line below that, there is a single graphic. Left-click it to
decrease the number on the line above (the buffer size). It only goes down to
64. With it that small, you'll need a fast computer or a thin Sonar project to
make it work. I suggest trying 128 first.

The reason why Sonar keeps defaulting back to the internal audio is because of
a corrupted ASIO driver entry in the registry. I'd be willing to bet that, in
the recent past, you had an audio device made by Creative attached to this
computer. Creative's drivers are total crap, and, even when you uninstall them,
they leave your registry full of corrupted entries. Almost anyone that has ever
tried to use an Audigy with Sonar will have run in to this problem, for
example. Not sure what to tell you to do about that. The last time I saw this
on a customer's computer, I had to search the registry and clean it all out by
hand. As I said, their uninstall programs don't remove all of their junk.

Hi. ti firewire, yes, I've done all that... with this machine, I've used two
other firewire interfaces with no trouble. The project mix won't let me select
wdm. It just defaults back to the internal soundcard when you try to change
the driver mode in sonar.

Thanks,

Cameron.

So have you tried wdm? Did this always happen on this machine, or did it just
start to happen? If this is a firewire unit, you've been through all the steps,
made sure you have a T.I card, disabled 1394 networking under control
panel>system>hardware>device manager>network adapters etc?

Hi. yes, already set to acio. And yes, if you play a synth on an existing
track, you get the same results.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Have you tried switching driver modes from wdm to asio? You say that this only
happens when new synths are inserted? Meaning that if you play synths from
projects that you've already done, even if you manually play those synths they
work? Or do they also exhibit this latency?

Subject: [ddots-l] sonar 8.53 and project mix latency.

Hi all. sort of going mental over here and need some tips. (win xp pro sp3,
intel I7 quad core, 3gb ram, sonar 8.53 producer.)

Just setup my system the other day with my new m audio project mix, ct for 8.5,
the latest version of hsc, and some new rapture and dimension packs I found
etc. I thought I'd get totally up to date.

Well, playback of projects is totally fine. I can load a project with a dozen
instances of soft synths plus audio tracks and it works like a charm.

However, when I insert a soft synth into a new project, say, one instance of
dimension pro or true pianos, there is about a one second delay from when you
hit a key to when you hear the note you played. You can't even play a scale of
quarter notes without it missing three or four, no matter how slow you play.
And fast runs or trills don't get reproduced at all.

I didn't have this issue with the firebox I was just using before I switched to
the project mix. For now I am set to record at 24 bit, 44.1. the playback and
recording buffer sizes are 256. I played with them a bit but got no better
latency.

I am having this problem with stand alone instruments too. Like Synthogy ivory.

Any tips on what I could do to sort this out?

Also, before anyone asks, yes I am using the external midi, all the ins and
outs are set correctly and the drivers are checked in Sonar, and, I did a reset
on the project mix in control panel.

I've never seen latency this bad on an interface! There must be some setting I
haven't checked...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cameron.
